The zone 7b problem
Zone 7b is the trap that catches the most container gardeners — not because it's hard, but because it feels easy. With roughly 214 growing days and moderate winters, almost everything in the seed catalog will grow here. That's the problem. It teaches you that everything will work, until the year it doesn't.
What goes wrong here
- Trusting the average frost date. A "median last frost" date means half the time, it frosts later. Zone 7b regularly sees a surprise frost in early May that takes out tomato transplants. Set out two weeks after the median date, or be ready to cover.
- Skipping shade cloth in July. Zone 7b regularly hits 90-95F stretches that container plants struggle with. The same tomato that fruited fine in cool June will stop setting fruit at 90F+ nights. A 30% shade cloth on the worst weeks of July is a yield-saver, not an optional upgrade.
- Underestimating humidity-driven disease. Zone 7b summers are warm and humid enough that fungal pressure is real — early blight, powdery mildew, downy mildew. Prune the lower foliage off tomatoes, water at the soil line, and don't grow squash and cucumbers in the same patch year after year.
- Planting only in spring. Zone 7b has a real fall season. Most gardeners stop planting in June and miss the second crop entirely. Brassicas, root crops, and overwintering greens transplanted in August produce through November and sometimes longer with a cold frame.

A note for first-time zone 7b gardeners
Zone 7b is the band that breeds overconfidence. Almost everything will grow here, until a surprise May frost or a humid July week proves otherwise. The growers who do best treat the 214-day season as a planning horizon, not a guarantee — covered transplants in spring, fungal vigilance in summer, and a real fall crop in August.
One last thing — your local extension office will have frost dates and pest maps calibrated to your county, not to the average zone 7b numbers in this guide. The averages are good enough to plan a season around. The local data is what saves the crop.
